Around Tavira

Ria Formosa

The coastline of Tavira forms part of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, which is renowned for its birdlife and wildlife.

Beaches

The long, sandy beach of Ilha de Tavira is reached by a short ferry ride from Tavira.

There are restaurants and cafes, and sunloungers and umbrellas are available to hire. Lifeguards are present.

Barril Beach is reached by miniature railway. There are many other quiet beaches to the East of Tavira, stretching towards the Spanish border.

Villages

Small fishing villages such as Santa Luzia, Cabanas, Nora Cacela and Fuzeta are 5 – 10 minute’s drive or a bus or train ride.

The villages of the Serra do Caldeirao are a few kilometers north in the hills, among olive, almond and citrus groves.
