Elegant, picturesque Tavira is the most unspoilt town of the Algarve. It dates back to around 2,000 BC, and is built on both sides of the River Gilao, with its Roman bridge, 18th century houses, Moorish castle, and historic churches.
Tavira has an air of unhurried charm. There are numerous pavement cafes and restaurants, some overlooking the river, some in tree-lined squares, and many scattered around the town. Wander through Tavira’s maze of cobbled streets, then linger over a simple lunch of sardines, looking out over the river – delicious and very inexpensive! There are restaurants to suit all tastes – Portuguese, French, Chinese and Indian.
Fishing is an important industry for Tavira, and there is a daily market selling beautifully fresh fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and dairy produce.
There is a wide selection of shops and supermarkets, an internet café, and free Wi-Fi access in the old market, which is now converted into shops and restaurants.
Tavira Garden is a 15 minute stroll from Tavira. |
